about
The single “When Trouble Comes” marks a welcome reunion for frequent co-writing partners Allison Lupton and Craig Werth. The song was inspired by the dramatic annual spring flood of Ontario’s Grand River. Together Lupton and Werth draw comparisons to the uncertainty and trepidation many of us are experiencing during these times. The song features Werth’s rich lead vocals paired with Lupton’s beautiful vocal harmonies, masterfully backed by musicians Joseph Phillips (bass) and Mike Stevens (harmonica). Andrew Collins engineered the song as well as edited the accompanying video which concludes with stunning artwork by Ian Bell. The painting transforms from black and white to colour, bringing into focus a severe spring ice jam at “The Three Sisters” pillars on the Grand River.

When Trouble Comes
Allison Lupton (SOCAN) & Craig Werth (BMI) - 2020
The river is rising, this dam won’t hold
Trouble comes, trouble comes
Angry water, deep and cold
Trouble comes, trouble comes
Better get higher up the valley side
Find some shelter from this plight
Ice is melting, water too high
Trouble comes to us tonight
The sky is dark, the air is still
Trouble comes, trouble comes
Birds fly up beyond the hill
Trouble comes, trouble comes
Better get higher before the slide
Find a hand, hold it tight
Ground is shifting, better take flight
Trouble comes to us tonight
They shout directions, but no one knows
Trouble comes, trouble comes
Compass spins, which way to go
Trouble comes, trouble comes
Better get higher than the noise down here
Rise about the tide of fear
Tender hearts, no end in sight
Trouble comes to us tonight
Here we are in the same boat
Row as one to stay afloat
Bailing worry, pulling hard
No chart for this, we search for stars
When trouble comes, when trouble comes
When trouble comes, when trouble comes
